This list is the best information we have on the status of al-Qaida operatives believed to still be at large, broken down into leadership, family, advisors, and operatives, with a subset of women operatives. 

Some of the spellings may vary from what has been published elsewhere since different Arab countries use different spellings of even the most common names. Where a reward has been offered by the U.S. government, it is noted at the end of the personal information section of the profile.    

LEADERSHIP

Osama Bin Laden

Citizenship: Revoked by Saudi Arabia in 1994

Aliases: Usama bin Muhammed bin Laden, The Shayhk," Hajj, Abu Adullah, The Director, The Manager, The Engineer.

Personal: The “emir” of al-Qaida, its undisputed leader.  Each al-Qaida member must swear “bayat” personal loyalty to Bin Laden and accept his orders.  Still at large even though there is a $25 million reward on his head.  Responsible for the attacks on World Trade Center and Pentagon, the East Africa Embassy bombings, the USS Cole bombing and an assassination attempt on Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Married five times, divorced once, he is believed to have more than 20 children, at least three of whom, Saad, Mohammed and Hamza, have fought with him.  Others split with him after he divorced his first wife and married a 17-year-old Yemeni woman.

Educated in Saudi Arabia, his contact with the West is limited to one visit to the Alhambra in Cordoba, Spain, in the early 1970’s.

Ayman al Zawahiri

Citizenship: Egyptian

Aliases: Abu Muhammad, Abu Fatima, Muhammad Ibrahim, Abu Abdallah, Abu al-Mu'iz, The Doctor, The Teacher, Nur, Ustaz, Abu Mohammed, Abu Mohammed Nur al-Deen, Abdel Muaz, Dr. Ayman al Zawahiri.

Personal: The former head of Egyptian Islamic Jihad which he merged with Al-Qaida in June 2001.  Al-Zawahiri is a pediatrician and the founder of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad. This organization opposes the secular Egyptian Government and seeks its overthrow through violent means. Al-Zawahiri is believed to now serve as an advisor and personal physician to Bin Laden and is currently thought to be in Afghanistan.  His wife and children are believed to have been killed by U.S. bombers in Afghanistan. The U.S. has established a reward of $25 million for information leading to his capture.

Saif Saif al-Din al-Ansari al-Adel:

Citizenship: Egyptian

Real Name: Mohammed Makkawi

Aliases: Muhamad Ibrahim Makkawi, Seif Al Adel, Ibrahim Al-Madani

Personal: Al-Qaida’s No. 3, its military commander and chief military strategist, succeeding Mohamed Atef, who was killed in November 2001 and Khalid Sheik Mohamed, who was captured in March 2003.  Served previously as al-Qaida’s security chief. As early as 1987, wanted to hijack a commercial aircraft and fly it into the Egyptian Parliament. Wrote an analysis for an al-Qaida website advising Iraqis on how to fight the U.S. Sees himself as a strategic thinker. Thought to be in Iran by some. 

The U.S. has established a reward of $25 million for information leading to his capture.

Amin al-Haq

Citizenship: Afghan

Aliases: Muhammed Amin

Personal: Bin Laden’s personal security coordinator.  Born in Nangahar Province, he fought against the Soviets in the 1980’s and is familiar with the territory of Afghanistan and nearby areas of Pakistan and Iran.

Suleiman Abu Ghaith

Citizenship: Revoked by Kuwait in 2003

Aliases: The Spokesman

Personal: A former religious studies teacher, he is now al-Qaida’s spokesman.  He left Kuwait in 2000 and traveled to Afghanistan to work with Bin Laden.  He was unknown to U.S. intelligence before his appearance on an al-Qaida tape aired on al Jazeera the day U.S. operations began in Afghanistan.   Bin Laden can be seen poking fun at him in several of the tapes.  Not viewed as part of the operational component of al-Qaida, he has been increasingly vocal in recent months.

Mafouz Ould Walid

Citizenship: Mauretanian

Aliases: Abu Hafs the Mauretanian, Khalid al Shiquiti, Mafouz Walad al-Walid, Mahamedou Ouid Slahi.

Personal: A native of the African nation of Mauritania, Walid was said by the U.S. to have been killed in an air strike in Afghanistan in January 2002, but he has recently been placed among dozens of al-Qaida members being sheltered in Iran. He was listed by the Pentagon as one of bin Laden's top aides in the immediate aftermath of the Sept. 2001 terror attacks.

Thirwat Saleh Shirhata

Citizenship: Egyptian

Aliases: Thirwat Saleh Shihata

Personal: Egyptian Islamic Jihad Deputy Emir, Zawahiri’s No. 2.  He has received two death sentences in absentia in Egypt for alleged terrorist activities.  Believed to have been part of the plot to assassinate Anwar Sadat. An operator who may be in Iranian custody.

Abu Musab al Zarqawi

Citizenship: Jordanian

Aliases: Khalailah, Ahmed Fadee Ii Al-Khalaylah, Ahmad Fadi1 Nazza1i, Abu Al-Mu'taz

Personal: Has ties to al-Qaida, al-Ansar and Hezbollah. A new FBI description of him notes: “Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi has had a long-standing connection to senior al-Qaida leadership and appears to be highly regarded among al-Qaida and a close associate of bin Laden and Saif al-Adel.”

He has participated in acts of terrorism, trained terrorists, led terrorist cells, facilitated transport of terrorists and is being cited in the international press as a suspect in the recent devastating bombing of the Jordanian embassy in Baghdad…provided financial and other support to the terrorists who assassinated U.S. diplomat Laurence Foley in Amman, Jordan last October.  Zarqawi has also been involved in smuggling terrorists into Israel, has arranged training for Jordanian terrorists in al-Qaida camps.  In his speech to the United Nations Security Council last February, Secretary of State Powell revealed that under the regime of Saddam Hussein, Zarqawi and his network found refuge in Iraq and Zarqawi himself was treated in a Baghdad hospital.  Zarqawi’s network also established a poisons and explosives training camp in Northwest Iraq. Indicted in absentia in Jordan for his role in the al-Qaida Millennium bombing plot targeting the Radisson SAS hotel in Amman as well as other American, Israeli, and Christian religious. sites in Jordan.

Mustafa Ahmed Hassan Hamza

Citizenship: Egyptian

Aliases: Abu Hazem, Mohamed Gamal El-Sayed, Mohamed Gamal El-Sayed Ali Khalil.

Personal: Commander of the military branch of the Islamic Group. He was sentenced to death in absentia by an Egyptian court in the Returnees from Afghanistan case. It is believed he took part in the 1981 assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, the attempted assassination of President Mubarak in 1995, and the Luxor massacre, which killed more than 60 German and Japanese tourists as well as Egyptian guides, in 1997.  Believed to be in Iranian custody along with Shirhata above.

Fazul Abdullah Mohammed

Citizenship: Comoro Islands

Citizenship: Comoro Islands

Personal: Director Al-Qaida operations in East Africa. who is leading suspect in both the November 28, 2002 terrorist attack on beachfront hotel in Kenya and has been indicted by FBI in connection with Aug. 6, 1998 bombing of U.S. Embassy in Nairobi and U.S. Embassy in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.

Speaks fluent English, French, Arabic and Swahili.  After the November 2002 attack he fled to Mogadishu but is believed to be back in Kenya. Reported to have trained with bin Laden in Afghanistan. The U.S. has established a reward of $5 million for information leading to his capture.

Bilal Bin Marwan

Citizenship: Saudi

Aliases: Mullah Bilal

Personal: One of the oldest operatives in al-Qaida, Marwan is described as a senior lieutenant to bin Laden. A Saudi accused of helping plan the attack on the USS Cole in October 2000, he was also behind a plan to attack U.S. and British naval ships in the Strait of Gibraltar in 2002 and another to attack U.S naval ships in Bahrain this year, according to Moroccan and U.S. officials. He has become critical to the group's current functioning and is also working out of Pakistan, where he worked with Khalid Sheik Mohammed.

Ahmad Mohammad ali al-Hada

Citizenship: Yemeni

Aliases: N/A

Personal: Described by U.S. officials as “a prominent al-Qaida member” whose family served as a “supercell” for the terrorist group. Al-Hada, who fought with Bin Laden in Afghanistan, is the patriarch of a family whose members played key roles in both the bombing of the Cole and the Sept. 11 attacks. His son, Sameer al-Hada, a Yemeni student and suspected al-Qaida courier, blew himself up with a hand grenade in February 2002 outside the Yemeni capital of Sana’a, rather than cooperate with security forces who wanted to talk with him regarding the Cole bombing. A son-in-law, Khalid al-Midhar, was the ringleader of the al-Qaida cell that flew American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon.  Another, Mustafa Abdulkader, is among 16 men listed as wanted by the FBI in a terror alert issued the same week Sameer was killed.   Moreover, al-Hada operated al-Qaida’s so-called “Yemeni Switchboard” Used by Bin Laden and others to pass messages during the run-ups to both the Cole bombing and the Sept. 11 attacks.

Ahmed Said Khadr

Citizenship: Canadian, Egyptian

Aliases: al-Kanadi (“The Canadian”)

Personal: An al-Qaida financier, Khadr had dealings with senior al-Qaida leaders while running a charity, Human Concern.  The charity was financed in part by the Canadian International Development Agency.  CIDA gave $325,000 to Human Concern between 1980 and 1997. Khadr had contact with Bin Laden from at least 1988.  Canadian intelligence agents claim that in 1995 he funneled money through Human Concern to finance the al-Qaida bombing of the Egyptian embassy in Pakistan that was orchestrated by Al Zawahiri. Seventeen died. Only after the blast did CIDA cut off its grants to Human Concern.  Ahmed Khadr was arrested in Pakistan in 1995 but was released in 1996 following what Canada’s National Post described as "an extraordinary intervention" by Prime Minister Jean Chretien during a state visit to Islamabad.   Two of his sons fought against the U.S. in Afghanistan and were captured.

Personal:  Aide to bin Laden who sees himself as an al-Qaida intellectual, propagandist and writer.  Little is known of him other although it is possible his name is actually a pseudonym for another al-Qaida leader.  Wrote for a now defunct al-Qaida website, Al-Ansar, al-Quarashi compared the September 11 attacks with the Palestinians’ attacks at the Munich Olympics, finding both of them propaganda victories.  In the February 2002 article, he wrote: "While the Munich operation failed to accomplish its goals, the New York raid was very well planned, and accomplished its planners' goals in full. It painfully challenged America, and was an unprecedented slap that had, and will still have, ramifications for the entire world. Unlike the Munich operation, which was limited and had limited national demands, the New York raid had broad goals and aspirations; it rang the bells of restoring Arab and Islamic glory…”

Midhat Mursi

Citizenship: Egyptian

Aliases: Abu Khabab

Personal: Al-Qaida’s main WMD researcher and general weapons expert.  He ran the Abu Khabab training camp in Afghanistan prior to the U.S. invasion.  That camp was known as the weapons research and development camp interested in chemical and biological weapons, particularly toxins. The camp trained not only al-Qaida members, but members of other Islamic terrorist groups as well.

Saad bin Laden

Citizenship: Saudi citizenship revoked in 2003

Aliases: None Known

Personal: Osama bin Laden’s third oldest son and fourth oldest child.  He is the oldest son known to be loyal to his father, his brothers Abdullah and Abdel Rahman being more loyal to their mother, who bin Laden divorced a few years ago to marry a 17 year old Yemeni girl.  Believed to be in Iranian custody.  Saudi Arabia has, unsuccessfully so far, asked Iran to extradite him. 

Believed to have been an integral player in the May 2003 Riyadh bombings and responsible for planning the March 2001 bombing of the Djerba synagogue in Tunisia along with Khalid Sheik Mohamed.

Mohammed bin Laden

Personal: Bin Laden’s fourth oldest son, fifth oldest child, married to the daughter of Mohammed Atef, the late al-Qaida operations chief.  Believed to travel with his father as a bodyguard.  One of three sons believed to fight with al-Qaida.

Citizenship: Saudi

Aliases: N/A

Personal: Bin Laden chief financier and brother-in-law.  A Saudi, Said is Bin Laden's brother-in-law and al-Qaida's financial controller. He first linked up with Bin Laden in Sudan during the late 1990s.  Some U.S. investigators believe he wired money to Mohammed Atta, ringleader of the hijackers, before the Sept. 11 attacks.

Mohammed Jamal Khalifa

Citizenship: Jordanian

Aliases: N/A

Personal: Bin Laden’s brother-in-law and a man often accused of being an al-Qaida financier in Southeast Asia, but now a restaurateur in Saudi Arabia!  Twice arrested, once in the U.S. and in Saudi Arabia, but released both times.  He was tried in Jordan and acquitted.  He claims that he broke with his wife’s brother in 1986 but U.S. intelligence believes that in 1988 he played a key financial role in Bin Laden’s financing of Abu Sayaf and Ramzi Yousef's operations in the Philippines.

Imad Fayez Mugniyah

Citizenship: Lebanese

Aliases: Emad Mugniyeh, Jawad Nouredine

Personal: Mugniyah is the alleged head of the security apparatus. for the terrorist organization, Lebanese Hizballah. He is thought to be in Lebanon. The man responsible for the deaths of more than 300 Americans during the 1980’s, including those lost in the Beirut embassy bombings, the Beirut Marine Barracks bombing and the killings of Beirut CIA Station Chief William Buckley and LTC William Higgins.  Mugniyah is reported to have participated in Buckley’s torture prior to his being killed and Higgins’ being hanged.  Many in the CIA and Special Ops communities see him as significant as Bin Laden.

Aliases: Abdul Rahman Said Yasin, Aboud Yasin, Abdul Rahman S. Taha, Abdul Rahman S. Taher

Personal: Believed to be at large in Iraq.  He fled to Iraq after participating in the terrorist bombing of the World Trade Center, New York City, on Feb. 26, 1993, which resulted in six deaths.  Jailed by Saddam Hussein’s regime, he was interviewed in prison garb by CBS’s Leslie Stahl in 2002.  Released during a general amnesty just before the war, he is being hunted by a CIA team.

Personal: Reputed to be key al-Qaida operative in Saudi Arabia, having taken over command of the Saudi cell after the Saudis captured or killed his superiors in the wake of the Riyadh attacks.  Identified by some as mastermind of Riyadh bombings.  Left Saudi Arabia at age 18, fought in Bosnia and Chechnya.

Returned to Saudi Arabia via Yemen, following 9/11 attacks.

Veteran of both the Afghan terror camps and battles against Soviet and U.S. forces in Afghanistan. Appears in an al-Qaida martyrdom tape retrieved by U.S. during Afghan war kissing his gun.

Mevlit Zikara

Citizenship: Turkey

Alias: Abu Obeida the Turk

Personal: Arrest warrant issued by Lebanese authorities in February 2003 for Zikara. Accused of membership in al-Qaida and of setting up terrorist network in Lebanon. 

Following 9/11, Zikara allegedly helped members of al-Qaida living in Arab countries to reach Afghanistan via Iran, to fight with Taliban. If convicted, could face death.

Personal: Member of al-Qaida network in Spain.  Responsible for sending foreign jihad fighters to a terror training camp in Indonesia. Instructor of physical training at the camp.

Personal: Detained in Philippines for six weeks for alleged links to international terrorism and involvement in deadly bombings in Manila in December 2000 (arrived back in Indonesia end of April, 2002).

According to Philippine police, was a suspected member of Jemaah Islamiyah.  Indonesian President Sukarnoputri reportedly intervened for his release. Linrung is former treasurer of the National Mandate Party, which is led by Indonesia’s assembly speaker.

Personal: Under investigation by French authorities for involvement with the April 2002 attack on a synagogue on resort island of Djerba, Tunisia.

Specifically, believed to have bought a satellite phone and shipped it to brother Nizar Naouar (main suspect in the attack) – phone was reportedly used hours before the attack to call people in Pakistan and Germany with suspected links to al-Qaida. Walid Naouar admitted to investigators that he had partial knowledge of his brother’s plans. He did not know, however, what site his brother was planning to target.

Personal: An American citizen sought by U.S. and Pakistani authorities. Believed to be a facilitator for al-Qaida operating out of Pakistan.  The first woman to be accused of having links with Al-Qaida. She holds a PhD in neurological science and has studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Brandeis University.
